Camp Union, Civil War Training Camp, Potsdam, NY
By: Potsdam Historian
In the summer of 2019, SUNY Potsdam Anthropology Dept. did a dig at the site of Camp Union in Potsdam to see if they could uncover any evidence of the camp.

This 1864 Clarkson Farm and village Lots map of Potsdam shows written in 'pencil' a faded "parade grounds" just north of Grove Street. This is the first map clue about Camp Union.
Camp Union was build in a field above Grove Street, bordered by Market Street, May Road, and Leroy Street. It was the home of the 92nd New York Volunteers, organized by Jonah Sanford. In 1832, Jonah Sanford was appointed a brigadier general of the NYS militia. Sanford was with the 92nd regiment until he resigned, due to his advanced age.
